This week, our Friday Five will concern the staple of any longterm booking plan, the feud. There have been some classic feuds going on, and some long-running feuds happening right now. Let's dive in!
1. What makes up a good feud in your mind?
2. What two wrestlers do you think would have had a great feud but never had the chance to back in the day?
3. What was the feud you had the highest hopes for but ended up fizzling out?
4. Does the WWE overkill feuds today with having the same match happen at four or more PPVs in a row?
5. Best feud ever. NAME IT!
1. What makes up a good feud in your mind?
ReplyDeleteYou need a couple things. There needs to be logic in the progression, the building of heat, the booking of matches, etc. Believability (or maybe credibility would be the better word) is crucial. The fans have to be able to buy-in to what they're seeing. Obviously, if Jaime Knoble suddenly started PWNING HHH out of the blue, the fans wouldn't buy it.. a feud between the two of them would make no sense. Lastly, but not least....ly... you need in-ring work tht befits the the feud.
2. What two wrestlers do you think would have had a great feud but never had the chance to back in the day?
Hart and Hogan. This could've been done in WWF or WCW and I think it would've been compelling. Despite his NUUUUUUUUUMEROUS faults, Hogan has shown he can put on an excitign show in the ring from time to time and with Hart carrying him, I think it could've been something special. WCW really should have paried the two when Bret made his WCW entrance.
3. What was the feud you had the highest hopes for but ended up fizzling out?
Jericho/Goldberg in WCW.
4. Does the WWE overkill feuds today with having the same match happen at four or more PPVs in a row?
Honestly, I like when workers are paired for long periods of time. My biggest complaint with feuds in WWE (aside from some of the week-to-week asininity that happens) is that they're too quick. I know things move faster in wrestling today with all the TV and PPV, but I sort of long for the old days when guys could work a program for a year or more.

I'm probably gonna catch crap for this, but I loved Sting vs. Hogan/nWo.
1. What makes up a good feud in your mind?
ReplyDeleteLogic is probably number one for me. I need to know why these two guys hate each other, and everything they do until they culminate in the blow off needs to make sense with their motivations. Take Hunter/Orton from Mania this year. Every other week it seemed like both guys' reasons for being in the match changed, and that's what lost me on the feud. Also, if the goal's to get the babyface over in the end, the heel needs heat, not just on the face he's feuding with, but with other established guys to build up credibility.
2. What two wrestlers do you think would have had a great feud but never had the chance to back in the day?
Bret/Hogan's a good one, and while these two guys missed each other slightly timing-wise, I think a Shawn Michaels/Rock program could have been really good.
3. What was the feud you had the highest hopes for but ended up fizzling out?
-Either HHH/Angle with the Steph love triangle or the WCW/ECW Invasion, which was booked so horribly I shudder to think of it.
4. Does the WWE overkill feuds today with having the same match happen at four or more PPVs in a row?
-In some cases, like with Cena and Edge or Jericho and HBK, it works because the guys have great chemistry and know how to tell an evolving story. But, if I see Big Show put John Cena in another camel clutch, I'm going to punch a wall.
