For the last RAW of the year, many, including myself, thought they were going light on the storyline material and heavy on wrestling. They usually go all in for the first RAW of the year, so why not go filler for the post-Christmas RAW? Yeah, they'd have none of that. A lot went down, and to tell you the truth, I could dig most of it.
First off, they FINALLY put Miz over huge tonight. No one is going to remember that he lost via countout and shenanigans to Jerry Lawler. They WILL remember that he may have kayfabe killed the old man though. Just a fantastically done segment, and Miz comes out looking like a stone-cold killer.
Secondly, the Cena/Punk/Nexus stuff was very well-done. The opening segment was scorching hot, and the closing segment, excepting the lame-ass "CM Sucks" nickname, was very effective. Punk putting on the Nexus armband actually made sense, although I hope that this band of minions has a better fate than his prior Straight Edge Society.
I hated that Tyson Kidd got buried, and I would rather have seen Sheamus go over Orton, but that wasn't enough for me to reverse my positive feeling. Solid show, and hopefully, they follow up next week.
Remember you can contact TH and ask him questions about wrestling, life or anything else. Please refer to this post for contact information. He always takes questions!
Vicious beatdown by Miz on Lawler. More so than any "gingerly kick and hit our shitty finishers on our victim" Nexus beatdown.
ReplyDeleteSheamus needed that match more than Orton did, but this is WWE, so the face went over. Has Sheamus won a non-KotR-tournament match since losing the title in September?
Henry destroying Kidd and his bodyguard was pretty shocking, especially after that backstage thing with Bryan. I'd love to see Henry get the Rumble title shot, but it'll probably end up being a three-way with Orton and Morrison. LOL at them not having enough faith in Morrison to put him in a one-on-one title match at the Royal Rumble.
I really have no interest in watching Cena go through the Nexus on his way to its leader again; it's not like the outcome is going to be any different this time. Cena-Punk didn't need this (even if Punk sitting in the chair and putting the armband on was a cool comic-booky moment). And how do you bring Barrett back? It's too soon for a face turn (though his exchange with Otunga on the finale of NXT 1 demonstrated that he could be an effective face), and Smackdown already has a surplus of heels.
I thought it was a good show. The Seamus/Orton match was solid, though I would rather there had been a different ending. Some great promo work though. I thought Punk/Cena to start was very good, but The Miz before his match with Lawler was simply AWESOME. One of the best simple heel promos I've seen in a long, long time. He rants spectacularly well.
