Instant Feedback: When Did RAW Become a Dance Show?

Seriously, when did RAW become Dancing with the Stars? The WWE does so much right, but the sad part is, when they do right, they have a tendency to undo all that goodwill. It wasn't just the dance off, but that dance off was terrible. When Sean Waltman calls you out and is 100% completely in the right about those criticisms, you know you're in the wrong. And then Khali going for a pin afterwards? Ugh.

But yeah, it wasn't just the dance off. It was John Cena heeling it up in distracting Miz during his match against Edge and yet still being positioned as a face. It's Randy Orton's emotionless demeanor and boring movements when he's supposed to be a crowd-engaging face. It's continually shoving terrible film trailers down our throats instead of trying to get the prime product over.

It's a shame too, because the start to RAW was so promising, so epic. Alberto del Rio bringing out a live mariachi band to celebrate his win, Miz coming out and rousing the rabble and del Rio going EL KABONG on Edge were all fantastic. But then we got the weaksauce to follow. Although I will say this, the end battle royale was pretty sweet. John Morrison had some crazy near-elimination scares, but his offense is so spotty and botchy. They cancel each other out, but I'm sure more people will remember the amazing elimination saves. And Lawler winning that Raw Rumble was a cool moment.

Still, the good stuff was outweighed by the crap for me. Sometimes, it just doesn't make sense how bad the WWE can fuck a show up, but they do. It's a shame.

  1. Cool moment? Lawler winning is the lamest moment of the night for me. There's a whole roster full of younger, better talent that could be facing off against the Miz next and we get to Lawler's cartoon caper, part 16? He needs to sit down and be old now. The win in the cluster awhile back was fun and didn't do any damage, but this is getting stupid, and he's getting in the way.

  2. Michael Cole's internet name is SparklyTempest??

Seriously the reason they're going with Lawler on the PPV is because they want Cena/Miz at Wrestlemania, and don't want to sacrifice any of their real wrestlers to Miz in the interim. I wouldn't read much more into it than that. Plus I can all but guarantee there will be Cole shenanigans in the match, leading to a Cole/Lawler match at Wrestlemania.

  3. Cole/Lawler would be even more farsical. I actually just have a very low bullshit tolerance. I have this insane desire to see good wrestlers put on good matches and not have my time wasted on a wrestling show. But it's all good. I got to see Christopher Daniels win the TV title tonight. So I shouldn't complain. And it's not like I'll buy any of the upcoming WWE PPV's anyway, for precisely these sorts of reasons. :)

  4. Dorian has it right on the nose. Cena/Miz is being protected for WrestleMania and Cole/Lawler was being teased all night.

It's gonna set up a super stacked card for WM if the rumored matches like Sheamus/HHH, Big Show/Diesel and Undertaker/Barrett happen.

  5. I laughed out loud at Tempest.

Dorian hit the nail on the head. A friend of mine called this when I asked for his pick, and said Miz/Lawler would be harmless at EC and still protect Cena/Miz at Mania, since that is all but inevitable now.

  6. I want to know when Lawler stopped being a solid worker.

  7. He didn't. Age ain't nothing but a number if you can still perform in the ring, and guess what folks? Jerry Lawler can still perform at a high level. If they strap him, then that's when I get a little annoyed, but until then, I'm looking forward to this match a whole lot.

  8. It should ALSO be noted Lawler is more over than any over midcarder that they'd sacrifice to His Awesomeness and that he threw THE GREATEST PUNCH EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND last night, thus proving Dibiase 2.0 is good for something.

  9. I don't know, I almost always hate Raw, but I dug last night's show. Wasn't much of a wrestling show (I dozed off during Edge-Miz), and there was some of the usual crap, of course; but in terms of angles and storyline advancement, it was about as good as it gets these days.

I like that Lawler's getting a PPV title shot, and that the Raw Chamber will determine who gets the 'Mania shot. Cena-Miz is your Raw title match, they had to blow Miz-Lawler off on PPV, and Lawler is still way better than Orton and Morrison.

I just wish it were Henry instead of Truth, or DiBiase instead of Truth so we could get Bryan and Regal for 15-20 minutes in the undercard. Though after their NXT match, I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Bryan-DiBiase again.

  10. It's called an opinion, something I'm entitled to. If you guys like watching a month of build up for a match you already know the result of, you're entitled to that too, but I don't. Someone else would have at least provided a shadow of doubt.

  11. No, you said you like seeing GOOD wrestlers put on GOOD matches, that Lawler is getting in the way. I'm sorry, but WWE has telegraphed where things are going; John Cena/Miz will be the headliner for Wrestlemania. Your call for spectrum of doubt for Elimination Chamber is already bunk. But to go onto the further point about good wrestlers being in good matches, your whole notion that Lawler can't put on good matches or can't rally a crowd behind him or can't do this or that is absolutely false. Lawler can still wrestle. He can put together an intriguing match that we know he won't win, but fact is, many of us will believe he has a chance because of the way he will work it.

There's something more to wrestling than this elitist 'good wrestling young guys' thing that Lawler is going to teach; it's more important to have a crowd suspend their disbelief than botch all over the ring like John Morrison or R-Truth.
