Future Endeavors 4/29 Power Poll: No Longer Dashing, but Now Money

Top two on my ballot this week
Welcome to yet another edition of the Future Endeavors Power Poll, a poll ranking wrestlers on a weekly basis based on how awesomely they performed or were portrayed on a Tuesday-to-Monday cycle. It is voted by a who's-who of wrestling bloggers, including my blogging Brohammad Ali, PizzaBodySlam. I will list the top ten, and then post and comment on my ballot. Here goes:

1. The Miz (Last Week: 1)
2. John Cena (2)
3. Alberto Del Rio (9)
4. Christian (8)
5. R-Truth (5)
6. John Morrison (3)
7. Cody Rhodes (NR)
8. Rey Mysterio (NR)
9. Kofi Kingston (NR)
10. CM Punk (7)

And now, my ballot:

1. Cody Rhodes - Two shows, two great promos and a pretty nice match with Rey Mysterio on Smackdown to boot, with a solid beatdown afterwards. Rhodes is becoming money, folks.

2. Rey Mysterio - The aforementioned match (and win) gets him to #2. Rey is taken for granted, but he shouldn't be, since he's probably on his last legs, literally.

3. The Miz - Picked the bones and got the win over John Cena in the RAW main event. Another solid performance from The Awesome One.

4. The Big Show - New co-holder of the WWE Tag Pennies, and he stood tall at the end of the opening show battle royale on RAW.

5. Drew McIntyre - I gotta give it up to the Chosen One for having the WWE free TV match of the week with Chris Masters on Smackdown.

6. Layla - Really coming into her own as a character. Her beatdown of Michelle McCool and reactions during it were classic.

7. Wade Barrett - Two solid matches on two shows, including a successful defense of his Intercontinental Championship on Smackdown.

8. Kofi Kingston - A win over Sheamus and a tainted loss to Barrett give Kingston his ranking this week.

9. Daniel Bryan - Stock Daniel Bryan ranking.

10. The Sheik - For winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Michelle McCool to Take a Break

If PWSpyware is to be believed, she's on her way out
WrestleZone via The Site That Shall Not Be Linked

So yeah, spoiler alert for Sunday, but Michelle McCool's apparently on her way out of WWE. PWInsider is reporting that the "Loser Leaves Smackdown" match between her and Layla will now be a true "loser leaves town" match, with McCool presumably putting her former in-character bestie over. The move is reported to free her up to stay at home and care for her ailing husband, The Undertaker.

Now, I pass this info along with skepticism because I don't see it anywhere else among reputable sites like the Torch or F4W, and remember, the last time PWI reported someone leaving the WWE? Yeah, they reported on three or four different occasions that a certain Chris Jericho appearance was going to be his last with the company, and there he was, on the show. So yeah, I think there needs to be a certain grain of salt taken with ANYTHING Insider reports. Either way though, it makes complete sense. She doesn't work house shows, she doesn't need the money, and hell, if I could stay at home to take care of my spouse, I would too.

I've ragged on McCool a lot over the last two years, but she's redeemed herself in character in the last six months. While LayCool started out as an annoying act (mainly because of the Piggie James stuff), when they were given less patently offensive material to work with, they were pretty good. Granted, I'm not as bummed about this as Batista leaving, and yeah, she'll almost certainly be back when Taker comes back, but still, it'll be interesting to see if Layla is still as good without McCool to play off of.

Follow Friday: Hacksaw Jim Duggan (Fake but Hilarious) and Zoo with Roy

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
To counteract the raging wave of Anglophilia sweeping the nation today, I figure today's Follow Friday will be swathed in the awesome that is USA! USA! USA! USA! Yes, for those prescient enough to see where I'm going, it's time to follow Hacksaw Jim Duggan on Twitter.

No, it's not the real Hacksaw, but I tend to think if he were really on Twitter, it would be boring, much like George "The Animal" Steele is right now. This fake Hacksaw, whom you can find @HacksawJDuggan, is absurdly amazing. Seriously, every tweet this guy comes out with is 100% finely distilled hilarity in 140 characters or less. Samples:
Jimmy Snuka's original nickname was "Super High" HooOoOo! That dude did a ton of coke. USA! (listens to Free Bird solo, steps onto balcony)
Went to get a haircut. Had to wait for Marty Jannetty to get his mullet perfect. Then I waited for Brutus to clean all the broken glass.
I live my life like I'm constantly in a Rocky IV montage. HooOooOoo! USA! USA! (runs on beach, chops down tree, powerslams a punching bag)
Seriously, how is that not the most awesome account in the history of awesome accounts?

The second in this two-fer today has nothing to do with anything I described above. AT ALL. The man is the mysterious, possibly penguin-esque Zoo with Roy, author of the critically-acclaimed Phillies bolg, I Want to Go to the Zoo with Roy Halladay. You can find him on Twitter @zoowithroy. Why do I urge you to follow this fine, upstanding Philadelphia expat living in DC today? Two reasons. One is that I didn't really give you a topical baseball account to follow for Opening Day. So what if he's region-specific? He's hilarious! Secondly, he's getting his own beer to be brewed by Iron Hill. HOW FUCKING AWESOME IS THAT? As a blogger, I really don't care if I ever get linked by a major site or make millions of dollars making cracks at Vince McMahon or whatever, but getting a beer named in my honor? FUCK YEAH, THAT'S THE PINNACLE OF WHY I'M IN THIS MEDIUM, BABY! Seriously though, beer or no beer, Phillies fan or hater, you gotta follow Zoo with Roy. He brings the lulz in a far different manner than faux-Duggan, but still in a way that can be appreciated by all.

Unless you don't like baseball. Then you're probably not American.

Friday Five: Royalty in Wrestling

I couldn't care any less about that wedding happening in England than I do now, but it does give me the opportunity for an easy theming for this week's Friday Five!

1. What was your favorite King of the Ring tournament?

2. Buy or sell: Prince Iaukea was underrated in WCW.

3. Who would you rather rule over your kingdom: Jerry Lawler, Booker T or Randy Savage?

4. How well do you think the Kings of Wrestling (Chris Hero, Claudio Castagnoli and their Queen, Sara del Rey) would fit in WWE? TNA?

5. Better court jester: Santino Marella or Eric Young?

So, Same Matter Doesn't Necessarily Have to Occupy Same Space

Seriously, shouldn't the space-time continuum have been rent asunder by now?
Screen grab: Seth Zillman

I thought they were trollin' when they brought Dolph Ziggler out with that new haircut two weeks ago. Then, they put him against Evan Bourne. If it weren't for the height advantage and the fact that Bourne wears long tights, I'm not sure you could have told the difference.

Although I do admit, I could go for a 10 minute, PPV match of these two going at it. Two of the best in the biz, right there.

TNA's Negativity

Via Grapple Kingdom

The linked is a blog by Stephen T. Stone from his excellent Grapple Kingdom blog about the difference in aura between the WWE and TNA. He posits that one of the reasons why TNA can be taxing to watch is a certain negativity that pervades the atmosphere. I agree with him. It's always, power struggles, divorce proceedings, sluts calling each other bitches and vice versa. It's just like watching the worst of human emotion all boil over in two hours of discomfort. Read the blog, because it really hammers home a trenchant point about TNA.

TWIOT: Sixers Postmortem

Evan Turner is a key component of the team going forward
Photo Credit: Getty Images via ESPN.com
The season ended in the same way it began for the Philadelphia 76ers last night, with a loss to the Miami Heat. The only change was the venue. Between those two losses, an improbable season unfolded, one that saw the staggering highs of beating teams like the Spurs and Celtics and the lows of starting out the season 3-13. If a season can be considered a moral victory, then this one definitely was a moral victory.

However, it had the potential to be so much more. Forget about doing better during that abysmal start; there were times during the season after that point where they kept pace with elite teams only to fall apart in the end, or even worse, crap the bed against teams that were, on paper, clearly lower than them on the totem pole. Now, everyone does that once in awhile; hell, the Lakers lost to the moribund Cavaliers this year. However, the Lakers also won enough games to capture the second seed in the West, meaning they beat good teams too. The Sixers were not the Lakers this year.

While that's not necessarily a bad thing, especially given that they went 27-55 last year, but going forward, there were things that could be corrected that would put the Sixers in better position next year. Defensively, they're probably one of the best teams in the league right now, bar none. However, in a league full of superstars, sometimes great defense is going to falter under the sheer will of a great player. That was readily apparent every time the Sixers played the Heat this year, as either LeBron James or Dwyane Wade would take over games and kill any momentum the Liberty Ballers would amass. The best way to counteract that would be to have a scoring option that can go toe-to-toe with said hot hand on the other team.

Short of hitting the (Draft) Lottery or getting a big-name free agent to come here, that's not easily attainable. Right now, the best hope is to increase Evan Turner's minutes next year and hope he shows more of the take-over-the-game ability he showed at the end of Game 4 of the Heat series rather than the spottiness he showed at times during the regular season. Being the #2 pick in the draft, he was expected to produce at a higher level, much like, say, Kevin Durant did. However, that wasn't the case. While some pundits are calling him a bust already, I look to his college career and see the growth pattern he showed there, starting slow as a freshman before really becoming an impact player as a junior, giving him his draft position. If he doesn't step up as a scoring threat, then the Sixers will decline, or they'll be forced to make a trade midseason for someone who can score, especially in crunch time.

Why? Because Andre Iguodala certainly isn't getting it done in that role. Don't get me wrong, The Other AI is a fine player, who has developed into an elite defensive player, capable of shutting down the other team's go-to threat. His locking down of LeBron James at times this year was amazing. However, he gets this superstar complex, and tries to take over games at the end on the offensive side, often forcing shots when double or triple-teamed. Turner emerging could be the signal to Iggy that he doesn't have to do everything, which would be nice.

One more thing I think the Sixers really need going forward is a center. I complained a lot about Samuel Dalembert, but at least he did something - block shots. What does his replacement, Spencer Hawes, do, other than hit an uncontested jumper here or there? Nothing, really. He's gotta go. They need a shot blocker in the middle who can clean up on the glass. Elton Brand at the power forward spot was nice this year, mainly because he was healthy most of the year for a change, but he needs help down low. Hawes does nothing for this team.

Other than that, there are some good pieces on this team that could congeal and form a strong playoff contender in the future with the right seasoning. Jrue Holiday, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams, Iguodala, Jodie Meeks and hopefully Turner can be players in this league for years to come. Hopefully, there's at least one more year of good, injury-free basketball left in Brand, and the team can get the parts needed to get their heads above water and not max out at 41-41 each year.

But in a league where it's so hard to build by that model, it's going to be rough. Really rough.

Can We Strike the Word "Ratings" from the Lexicon?

That's a violation
Screen cap credit: I Want Wrestling
I have to wonder, is there any show on television outside of professional wrestling that is self-aware of the concept of ratings? It's funny, of all the TV shows I watch, fiction or non-fiction, the only time I've ever heard the concept of "ratings" brought up was on a random ESPN show touting some Hall of Fame ceremony as the "highest rated" ever. Other than that, it's something worried about in the board rooms.

Meanwhile, on Impact, the term is dropped every other segment. What gives? I mean, it's almost like I'm watching a documentary of how a shitty wrestling company is run sometimes rather than a show that's supposed to have some semblance of kayfabe. To be fair, it's not just their fault. They're only taking a cue from some of the fans, whether they know it or not.

It seems there's a pocket of fans out there who love to microanalyze ratings, almost as much as Eric Bischoff's character does. With some of the message board discourse and the chatter on Twitter I see about ratings, it's almost like some fans care about the ratings of any given show as much as the network execs and company heads do.

Why?

I mean, what stake do we have in the ratings? Unless they get really, really poor to the point of threat of cancellation, they're irrelevant to you. If you enjoy the program, you tune in. If you don't, you tune out, or you watch with gritted teeth. Simple as that. Worrying about ratings is one of those things that we as fans shouldn't be doing. It doesn't concern us, and it leads to stupid stuff like not enjoying a segment we might have liked before because "it hurts ratings!"

The WWE knows this. They're way, way less referential to ratings than TNA is. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why the Zack Ryder = Ratings sign was taken down last week on RAW. I mean, RAW Monday had several Ryder-boosting signs, so either the WWE caved to the backlash, or they were more sensitive the reference of "ratings" than the reference to Ryder. Or I could just be assuming things. I don't know.

But what I do know is it's kinda dumb to worry about ratings. Leave that to the network execs and to the people running the companies. Let's strike the word "ratings" from the lexicon. Trust me, it'll be for the best.

The McMahons Are Psychotic; WWE Writer Is Far from a Dream Job

Pictured: A psychopath
Via Cageside Seats

Not to let TNA take all his exposé-writing wrath, S. Bruce is back at Cageside Seats detailing the ten most awfully ridiculous and horrifying tales from writing for the WWE. Some of these seem on the embellished side to me, but then again, if everyone who leaves Titan Towers has stories like that, then maybe there's truth to them? Who knows. Here's my personal favorite excerpt:
Dave Meltzer noted in an issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter a few years ago that Vince had, seemingly on a whim, decided that he had to have an urgent meeting with the creative team. Vince, who has been known for his somewhat erratic behavior (putting it mildly), then demanded everyone fly down to his pad in Florida. This meeting was so incredibly important, it simply couldn’t wait. However, as soon as they all went through the (long and stressful) journey getting down there, Vince suddenly decided he doesn't want a meeting after all, wouldn’t let them into house when they arrived and they all had to fly back to Stamford for another yet another meeting with Stephanie.
Holy shit, I'd be pissed. I wonder if they were at least able to expense the plane tickets...

My Wish for Wrestling Journalism

(This is sort of the unofficial second part of an unofficial two-part post from earlier today.)

Wrestling journalism is sometimes considered an oxymoron, and for good reason. The amount of stories that come out as untrue or at least partially true is staggering compared to other fields of reporting excepting maybe the celeb gossip rags. Even then, you'd expect publications that report on which celebrity is shacking up with what other celebrity to rely on rumors, hearsay and whispers down the lane. However, the fact that kind of reporting passes for the majority of what most wrestling news sites publish is sad to me.

In such a carny industry, it can be argued that rumors are the only means of reporting, that everything is so secretive that future plans and such, that every rumor needs to be jumped upon, regardless of the fact that plans change almost all the time in the big companies. However, whoever said that reporting only had to consist of future plans? Whatever happened to reporting on things that already happened, reacting and analyzing them and trying to make sense of the past rather than decode the future?

More often than not, rumors snowball into avalanches of half-truths and plans that never come to fruition. Where do these rumors come from? Usually nebulous "sources" within TNA or WWE. It's almost never a primary source, much like in the same case with all the Punk stuff today as astutely pointed out by K. Sawyer Paul. Again, jobs are on the line, so it's hard to pinpoint a primary source. Therefore, if you can't get a good primary source on things that may happen, then why report on it at all?

Of course, I've been guilty of this in the past. My Bryan Danielson source, which to me was a primary one, but again, he was only getting things from Danielson himself about stuff Creative "had planned" for him, only for it to be changed over and over again. I mean, I need not remind you of that big "scoop" I had placing Danielson and Evan Bourne in a then-future tag team. We all know how that turned out.

However, those sources can be crucial for sorting out things that did happen, why things happened. OR maybe journalists can look at things that happened and use critical deduction from available media that have been disseminated to try and give people accounts of why things happened rather than giving the shocking spoiler plans that may or may not happen.

Now, I doubt this will ever happen. There's always going to be a demand for knowing what's going to happen before it's going to happen, and then looking smarter than the people watching rapt with no notion of what's about. If it wasn't, then site after site that comes up reporting every little thing that gets rumored would not exist. However, they don't call it a wish for nothing. It might be hoping against hope, but I'd rather see more sites to analysis, reaction and focusing on things that have happened rather than things that might happen.

While we're at it, I'd love for those sites by and large to get rid of the pop-up ads and insidious malware, but hey, I'll settle for trenchant, real reporting first.

The "Punk Is Leaving" Talk

Is he really that much a mark for himself?
I guess I have to comment on it, don't I?

Several news sources are reporting that CM Punk is reluctant to sign a long-term deal with WWE and that when his contract is up in a few months, he walks. The reported reasoning is twofold. First, he's burnt out by the road schedule. Honestly, given how many guys, from Brock Lesnar all the way up to Chris Jericho who've walked outright or taken breaks because of the grind, maybe that should be a clue to WWE to change things up.

The second reason is what I want to expound upon a little. Apparently, the other reason is he's not being pushed hard enough. This is where I take a little bit of issue with everyone involved, and you'll see further later on today when I post my blog about wrestling journalism that I have down the pipe (I love how my blog plans for a day/week seem to be thematic completely by accident). One, if Punk really feels this way, then while I can understand his drive to be the best at his craft and to get recognition from his company, I think it might be a little shortsighted, especially since there isn't a viable second option for him to go to (and if anyone says TNA without the slightest hint of irony in their tones, then they deserve to get a thousand mosquito bites and be refused access to Calamine lotion). He's got job security, even if the writers don't have a clue what to do with him, and he's gotta be getting paid mad money. But that's all taking into account that that scuttlebutt is truth.

I'm very hesitant to believe that Punk would walk away from WW for that second reason, especially considering that there is no viable second company out there. I almost feel like the reasoning is smark fantasy, like they want to paint all wrestlers as marks for themselves to the point that they care as much about wins, losses and presentation as we fans do. I have a hard time believing that, especially in the face of the staged nature of the business. Now, if Punk does walk away in a couple of months, would I be shocked? No, not really, because again, the schedule is brutal for full-time workers, and because with Jericho, Batista and even Monty Brown among others, there is a precedent set.

However, I'd be very surprised if Punk's main reason for walking would be not winning enough matches. I mean, he feuded with Randy Orton into WrestleMania, which isn't bad if you ask me. He gets all the mic time he wants. He seems to have a good deal of creative freedom where others in his spot or ahead of him like Miz, R-Truth and the like, don't. I say let the speculation die, and if it's August and he's still not signed, then revisit it.

The Best Moves Ever: La Mistica

While I don't feel necessarily bad about criticizing Sin Cara's missteps in the ring thus far, I will also be the first to admit that there is a learning curve and that those criticisms should not be construed as damnation. The truth is that there were reasons why he was such a hot property in Mexico and a priority to bring in for WWE. Here's one of said reasons, the execution on his former finisher, La Mistica. Such a great sight to behold, poetry in motion into a submission maneuver. I think this move might be what lucha libre is all about.

Wrestling Six Packs: My Favorite Draft Moves

Bryan will flourish on the blue brand
Now that The Draft is over and done with, here are my favorite moves in the draft, or in some cases, non-moves. Note, Cena staying on RAW isn't here because FOR CRYING OUT LOUD HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MOVED ASDFKHAFKASHDFASads.

1. Daniel Bryan to Smackdown

Smackdown is the "wrestling" show, so it's only fitting that the best worker on the roster be moved to a place where he'll more easily get time in the ring to ply his wares. While I'm bummed that they took away a few potential standout opponents in Drew McIntyre and Jack Swagger, I think the mere fact he's on the show where matches are usually longer and given more weight is a good idea in and of itself. Plus, there's still unfinished business with Wade Barrett, and a chance to compete for the IC title as well. I'm also pretty intrigued over a possible Bryan/Justin Gabriel match, which could end up stealing whatever PPV/Smackdown that airs on if it ever happens.

2. Sin Cara to Smackdown

This move became patently obvious long before Rey Mysterio-to-RAW was announced. Cara NEEDS to be on Smackdown so that his missteps in acclimatizing to the WWE style can be edited out while he learns. Yeah, the potential for a Cara/del Rio program is quashed, but at the same time, del Rio is light years ahead of Cara right now in terms of build and push, so why blow your load on that?

3. Zack Ryder staying put

The common meme is that Ryder not moving is a travesty. Why do people think moving brands automatically means a renewed push? The only thing that worries me about his lack of movement is that it could spell him being part of the WWE's spring cleaning, but given how over he is, I don't think he's going anywhere. Now, whether you're part of the cynical "the WWE hates guys who get over by themselves" crowd or not will dictate whether you think he's getting pushed, but at the same time, if he is? RAW's the better venue for him because of his strong personality and his natural predilection towards shining in "entertainment" segments.

4. Beth Phoenix to RAW

Kharma/Kong is probably going to RAW, so what better money feud to build towards than her vs. the other anti-Diva? Yeah, Gail Kim's still on RAW too, but Kharma's going to need to have more than one go-to feud if they really want her to succeed. Phoenix provides the best chance for a more "even" match up, rather than the David/Goliath dynamic that nee-Kong would have with Kim.

5. Mark Henry to Smackdown

I think I like the heel turn more than I like the move itself, but given how the supplemental draft shook out, Henry will automatically go into Smackdown as one of the top heels along with Sheamus and Cody Rhodes. I think he's way better as a heel, both as a character and worker, and I can't wait to see if the turn brings renewed focus and drive.

6. Alex Riley to Smackdown

I know we all liked seeing A-Ry as Miz-with-a-Mario-Mushroom second for the Awesome WWE Champion, but let's face it; his weakness ISN'T with handling a microphone. Riley needed to get away from Miz and to establish himself as a character unto himself. I think he can do it. Plus, being on Smackdown with guys like Bryan, Christian and Yoshi Tatsu if he stays heel or if either he or any of the other big heels like Gabriel, Sheamus, Tyson Kidd or Ted DiBiase turn face, he'd have no shortage of guys to help season him in the ring. With faith behind him, A-Ry could blossom into a breakout superstar.

This Week in DVR: Better Late than Never, Yeah, I Know

Cody Rhodes is a mad genius

I watched what I couldn't watch live on my DVR or the Internet (and it took me more than one weekend to do it!). Here's what stood out:

Matches

JTG vs. Tyler Reks from Superstars - Usually, JTG isn't this good, but I think his bumping for Reks made this one stand out. They gave it a lot of time too. Nice opener for Superstars, but please, REKS' FINISHER IS NOT A FUCKING BURNING HAMMER GAWD.

Ted DiBiase vs. Mark Henry from Superstars - Not the best match these two could have had, but it was a nice little thing and worthy of main eventing the D-show. I really hope that the lack of faith in DiBiase is that they have nothing for him and not a reaction of his desire to stay in wrestling, because when they decide to get behind him, he'll have great matches that everyone will see. I loved his leg work, and Henry did a great job selling throughout the match. I thought they could have teased the bum knee in the finish a bit more, but I thought it was acceptable. Good stuff.

Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio on Smackdown - Very intense opener after Rhodes' blistering hot promo to start. These guys played up their hatred for each other well, and Rhodes really looked as good in the ring as he ever has. I liked the finish with the roll up out of the power bomb.

Chris Masters vs. Drew McIntyre on Smackdown - Strange match because of how the crowd reacted. I don't want to dock it too much for the mistake that the agents made, but I can't help but thinking that maybe Masters and McIntyre should have switched roles for that match. McIntyre was over as a face here because of where they were. So yeah, it had a strange atmosphere, but it was as good a match as you could imagine it was between Masters and McIntyre getting a good chunk of time on the main show.

Ray Rosas vs. Aaron Bolo from NWA Hollywood - Nice if simplistic match that featured a lot of leg work and a bit of heat from the prior week's show. Bolo sold his leg well throughout the match, and while I thought Rosas was a bit too simplistic for my liking, he did his job well. Great counter out of la casadora for the pin by Bolo.

Buggy and Davina Rose vs. Allison Danger and Candice LaRae on NWA Hollywood - Really good, if short, tag match. I thought Danger's antics here were great, and it led into the meat of the match with her refusing to get her hands dirty wrestling Buggy. I thought Rose played the face in peril great, and the inside cradle roll to segue into the hot tag was really well-done. Danger played the dominant heel psych well too, especially in dragging Rose to the corner on a pin attempt. The finish was a bit clunky. Buggy looks pretty raw and green to me, which is probably why Rose worked most of the match. However, it was good for what it was, and three of the four Lethal Ladies here held up their ends of the bargain.

Austin Aries vs. Willie Mack on NWA Hollywood - I had my doubts about this early on, as Mack kinda looked shaky on his strikes, but I thought he acquitted himself well overall. Really good match, featuring Aries' excellent showmanship, some hot moves, excellent pacing and Mack playing up the size advantage really, really well. I just love watching Aries work. Building around the brainbuster was a genius bit of storytelling, and I loved the bit where Aries locked in that standing figure four into the pin. The finish was well-done, and I was left with generally a positive first impression with Mack.

Shows

WWE NXT - Mostly pointless episode. Yeah, I didn't miss seeing the stupid challenges, and the tug of war thing was really fuckin' stupid. About the only thing good about it was Lucky Cannon's histrionics. I also can't believe they're rehashing the Hornswoggle/Chavo Guerrero feud with Darren Young in the same spot. It was old when it happened the first time. Ugh. The main event tag match was okay, and I kinda dig this whole Maryse/love triangle thing going on if only out of a morbid sense of curiosity over how awkward this'll play out. Still, it was running in place for the most part.

Superstars - Three decent matches. This is what Superstars should be every week.

Impact - While the opening-segment-promo formula was used again, it was a refreshing change from the last 16 months when it was some iteration on Hogan, Bischoff and whomever talk about boring shit. Opening with Styles and Bully felt hot, and with no interruptions from pointless NPCs or any of the stupid, sloppy or geriatric main eventers, it was a different feel. Oh yeah, we got our obligatory Hogan segment, and boy, was it terrible with its forced edginess and what not, but at least they waited until after the cold open and the first match. Anyway, this was better than normal, but still, they've got a long way to go.

Smackdown - Holy shit, so who knew Cody Rhodes was a franchise player? Man, talk about a cold open that was anything but cold, Rhodes KILLED it on the mic. Holy crap, man, holy crap. And the paper bags? Jesus. If he's not main eventing WrestleMania in two years at least, this company is fucked. After the first segment, the quality tailed off though. I thought the wrestling was good, really good, and I'm really digging the LayCool break up angle. Both women are playing this off really well. The break up tease I don't like is The Corre, because it's too soon, and because it's being overshadowed by the ladies. Also, I wasn't a huge fan of the end segment. del Rio was almost perfect in his delivery of it, but I think it went on too long, and the material he had to work with was pretty weak. All in all though, I think this was a solid effort if just for the matches and for Cody Rhodes absolutely killing it. KILLING IT, JERRY.

NWA Hollywood - Y'know, last week, I got a good flavor for what NWA Hollywood could show. This week, they were just showing off. They got four or five angles advanced, running the gamut from opening match-level to main event, and it didn't feel like they crammed it all in just to cram it in. Seriously, WWE Creative, it can be done. Very solid show, good promos, good angle advancement, and just this nexus of awesome indie talent like Danger, Aries, Colt Cabana, Johnny Goodtime, Scorpio Sky, all supplemented by the younger, up and comers like Mack, Bolo and Rosas. This is really a clutch find.

The Anatomy of a Promo: How R-Truth's Bad Delivery Ruined Good Content

Nope, still not feelin' him
Call me a hater. Go ahead. You won't be the first. However, while certain portions of the Internet are gushing over themselves to praise R-Truth's promo from last night, I remain unimpressed with him, even as his character has been refreshed and tweaked over the last couple of weeks. I will admit the content was good. It really was. I also thought that him opening by saying "RALEIGH, NORF CAROLINA... SHUT UP" was a great way to kick the segment off. However, it went downhill from there, and quick.

You can have the best promo material in the world, but if the delivery is off, then it's going to come out bad. That's exactly why I thought it went downhill how it did. It's not really what he was saying, but how he was saying it that always had me vexed with him. Those problems were never fixed. He's still mealy-mouthed. He still rambles. And for a guy whose gimmick it is to be a rapper, his dancing is absolutely the worst. All three of those were there last night.

The biggest detraction can be argued not to be his fault. The crowd started chanting "WHAT?" at the beginning of his promo. While this has been a problem for years, notice it rarely ever happens to guys who are good at delivering promos. I can't remember the last time CM Punk got a "WHAT?" chant. Why? Because he is a master of delivery. He makes people want to boo him, not chant things at him out of boredom.

It takes a lot more than good content for me to get into a promo. Truth rambled on and on, and I tuned out. Sorry if that makes me a hater, but I'm not going to lie and go with the new hotness just because the guy did the same thing he's been doing forever now with a different set of lyrics coming out his mouth.

God Bless 'Em for Trying, but The Draft Show Feels Flat Every Year

Yeah, this didn't feel forced or anything
Find courtesy of @GesusKriest
So, RAW started out last night with a big battle royale between the wrestlers... err, entertainers on the RAW and Smackdown brands. It was a decent tilt (although the WHC #1 contenders BR from Smackdown two weeks ago was better), and it had the superstars from either brand banding together to help get their brand draft picks.

And that's what was totally wrong with the picture.

For every other day out of the year except for the Draft and for about a week leading up to Bragging Rights, no one really gives a flying shit about brand loyalty. Hell, several wrestlers, including Wade Barrett, who was in that battle royale, have had heat with their respective GMs. Furthermore, why should Evan Bourne and Sheamus team up for anything when the two have spent the last year beating each other up (mostly Sheamus wailing on Bourne, but bear with me here)? Additionally, why should I think that any two random babyfaces care about teaming up, when the art of the face save has been pretty much abandoned in WWE lately? I mean, how many times have you seen a heel beat the crap out of a face, and that's it? If guys don't care enough about watching each others backs, then why should they care if they're on the same brand?

The WWE asks me to suspend disbelief a lot, and I do. I mean, I've been trying lately not to be one of those hypercritical Internet know-it-alls who points out every little flaw in the logic, but at the same time, this is a big leap of faith they're asking me to take. I find it very hard that most of these people have an attachment to the brand they're on, especially a guy like The Big Show, who gets shunted back and forth each year, that they'd cheer for someone coming to the brand that they've feuded with recently, that they really don't care enough to make sure they're not getting jumped or, in the case of a guy like Orton coming to Smackdown, a guy who will probably leapfrog them in the pecking order to get a title shot.

Comradery isn't something you can just pretend happens arbitrarily and have discerning adults swallow it like it's ice cream. It needs a solid build, and much like other things WWE Creative have tried let fly without a proper build, it comes off as forced, flat and fake. If you're going to do the Draft next year (and they definitely will keep doing this until they put an end to brand extension), then do it right. Don't make it come off forced, and don't insult my intelligence.

Instant Feedback: It Was Fun While It Lasted

The show began with John Cena being drafted to Smackdown and ended with him going back to RAW after taking the fall for Smackdown. If I didn't know any better, I thought that he might have been a mole the whole time. Eh. Either way, I thought it was a pointless exercise. Really? C'mon son, c'mon. The WWE had a chance to really shake things up, and they kinda dropped the ball. That being said, I didn't think that they would have both Cena and Orton on Smackdown, but all things considered, I'd rather they have sent Cena there.

Anyway, other than the draft picks, this was a pretty middling episode of RAW. The battle royale to start things was fun, although not even the best BR they've had in the last two weeks. The main event six-man tag was really good too, even with the inexplicable Mark Henry heel turn. Then again, as inexplicable as it was, it's good. I like Mark Henry better heel. I think there's a good series between Christian and Henry for the WHC.

I wasn't a huge fan of both secondary Champions eating pinfalls in their matches, but the end of the day, that doesn't bother me as much as it used to. The Cole/JR stuff was boring and overdone too, although I thought that JR busting Cole open was pretty funny and awesome in a pure trainwreck way.

Finally, R-Truth. Yes, the content of his promo was great. But his delivery is still so mealy-mouthed, and he's still got a tendency to ramble ramble ramble ramble and it drives me nuts. So yeah, it was marginally better than what he'd usually give, but he's got a long way to go before he impresses me. Sorry, folks.

The Disarray of the NWA: Why Colt Cabana's Title Loss Is Bad News All Around

Cool enough to wear shades indoors, but not cool enough
to hold the NWA World Title for more than 2 months...
Hey, remember back to the first weekend in March? Y'know, back when Colt Cabana won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from David McKinney's favorite wrestler, "Scrap Iron" Adam Pearce? Yeah, good times. It was the culmination of a months-long feud where Cabana chased Pearce on national-by-proxy television, and the title switch was lauded by fans all around the Internet, on Twitter and elsewhere. It was the first time the title felt relevant since it was affiliated with TNA, and if you discount that (seeing as it was known more as the TNA title rather than the NWA title), since WCW split from the NWA.

Then, Saturday night came and went, and lo and behold, from seemingly out of nowhere, this guy named The Sheik won the title. It was a move that might have gone unnoticed had it not been so abrupt and to a guy with really no noticeable build behind him. Of course, people will point out that he's received shots at Blue Demon, Jr. and Pearce before, so this is the "culmination of 18 months of build", but is it really a build if no one knows about it outside of the local feds this guy has been competing in?

Again, this would have been par for the course for any title change that happened between the falling out with TNA and September of 2010, but the game has changed. Like it or not, NWA Hollywood has taken the lead, put its locally-televised product on the Internet and created a somewhat viral sensation. People care about the the storylines and the wrestlers they see every week there, and that has to count for something to the NWA board of directors, or whoever it is who has to approve title switches. Is it fair that one region amongst the affiliated promotions should have this kind of priority over others? Maybe not, but then again, they're the ones putting themselves out there for the entire world to see. They're the ones who are doing the most to further the brand name, so of course they should get priority.

And not for nothing, but the Cabana/Pearce feud was far from over. They have been building towards a rematch. Now? Well, that's all been thrown in the garbage because a guy who isn't even part of the roster out west decided he was going to culminate his own storyline in his own fed for his own satisfaction. Yep, that's right, this Sheik guy, also known as Joey Machete, is the head booker of the venue where this match was sanctioned. I don't know how this played in the decision making process. I also really don't care at this point, because whether it was a transitional thing from start (rumors are rumbling that Pearce pulled a dickhead move and refused to job the title to Sheik outright), or whether it was a power play, it was still an idiotic, idiotic move that proves that the NWA has no interest in entering the 21st Century.

If there are that many hands in the pot when it comes to the NWA's hierarchy and structure, then it truly is an antiquated organization. If it wasn't, then they'd build through NWA Hollywood and look to expand from that jumping point rather than continuing to operate provincially. Instead of capitalizing on the buzz they generated by strapping Cabana and realizing that, hey, maybe they should change with the times, it was politics as usual. Meanwhile, we were robbed of a fan-favorite Champion.

Now, this is by no means an indictment of the Sheik as a worker or character. I have no exposure to him at all, so it would be ignorant to say this is a terrible move from a character standpoint. However, why go from a Champion that is known to most wrestling fans to an unknown quantity without any kind of visible-to-the-public build?

This decision to me proves that the NWA, now very much an independent organization, isn't immune to the same kinds of blunders that we rightfully roast WWE and TNA over the coals for. As fans, we want to have as many options in front of us as possible, and given the fact that NWA Hollywood, for better or worse (mostly better), is in the public eye should mandate that the governing body run everything through that arm just for the sake of giving us, the fans, an alternative we can enjoy. Would it have been that hard to work out a deal where Sheik worked his way up to Cabana over the next two or three months, with video montages heralding his past and building him up not as a newcomer, but as a visitor from another region looking for his rightful title spot? I'm not sure it would have been.

Instead, we got reason #182,439,195 as to why the NWA continues to be as irrelevant as it has been since its split from Turner Sports.

Off-Kilter Draft Preview: Ideal Smackdown Roster (I.E., Making It the "Action" Show)

If I had my way, this would be the top SD feud.
The Draft is on tonight's edition of RAW. I could write a preview about who I think is going where, but everyone else is doing that. So, instead, I will posit to you a dream roster of sorts. Traditionally, it's always seemed that in the parsing of the phrase "sports entertainment", RAW was the "entertainment" show and Smackdown the "sports" show. Those edges have blurred over the last couple of years, as RAW has gotten a lot more wrestling on the show, and Smackdown has been developing its own sense of "entertainment". Not that either is bad, per se, but I think that differentiating the brands would make for better contrast, which is what they were striving for from jump, I suppose.

The following is the roster I think would be most conducive to getting Smackdown to this level again. It probably won't shake out this way at all, but again, a guy can dream:

Main Event - John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Christian, CM Punk, Alberto del Rio, Jack Swagger, Undertaker*

Cena gives the roster ultra-star power, but he's also the best worker amongst the WWE's current Big Three (Orton and Trips being the others). He's shown that he's the most capable of working long, TV main events, and the main event heel foils on the other side of the ring are guys who are capable. Cena and Punk have had at least two or three really good free TV matches in the last two years. Mysterio and Christian are natural fits as well because DUH they're Mysterio and Christian. Besides, I doubt that Rey gets moved from Friday nights until Sin Cara makes it big, because he's key for the Latin audience.

Speaking of Latin audiences, I'd love to see del Rio stay put and have the rumored del Rio/Cena SummerSlam main event unfold on Smackdown. Punk obviously provides a strong heel presence that can work. The last main event spot has Swagger there (mainly because of the rub Cole gives to him), but it could rotate amongst Sheamus, McIntyre or Ziggler as well.

Finally, while Undertaker only seems to be a great worker come WrestleMania anymore (since that seems the only time he's really active), I'm really not sure you can take his association with Smackdown away until he retires. So he's here.

Upper Midcard - Daniel Bryan, Chris Masters, Goldust, Evan Bourne, Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, Dolph Ziggler, Heath Slater

The US Championship comes back to roost on Smackdown, and I think that eight-man lineup competing for it would provide some fireworks for matches. If you add in Mysterio or Swagger slumming it sub-main event, it only gets better. Goldust is a veteran pick that may not even come back to active duty, but if he does, then he'll only bolster the division. I'd probably feud him with Slater, who has the tools to become a competent WWE worker but has only shown it in flashes.

Bryan is really self-explanatory (and honestly, who WOULDN'T want to see a Bryan/Punk program?), and my love affair with Masters' in-ring abilities has been on display for the last year or so. I'd love to see him get more of a stage to do his thing. Bourne would serve a dual purpose. He'd be there to make guys ahead of him on the pecking order look good, but he'd also be given some higher profile matches and feuds as well. I think keeping him and Sin Cara on separate brands would help both guys, and I'd love to see Rey and Bourne team up as a threat to the Tag Titles every once in awhile.

Lower Midcard - Justin Gabriel, Yoshi Tatsu, Skip Sheffield, Byron Saxton, Trent Barretta, Curt Hawkins, Tyson Kidd, Zack Ryder, Brodus Clay, Alex Riley

Honestly, there's no reason why Justin Gabriel should be a heel other than he's always been associated with Nexus. While the concept of a heel high-flyer sounds intriguing on paper, it's one of those things that never works because fans, by and large, want to cheer for high spots. When you do them regularly, it makes you a babyface by default. Yoshi, Barretta and Sheffield as face workers work for me, but if Sheffield went heel when he came back, that'd work too. From the little I've seen of him in the ring, he seems very versatile. Saxton has the most athletic look of the NXT netherlanders, and he's got a lot of charisma. He could also work either way, but they seem to be positioning him as a face on NXT right now, so why not? The heel side looks pretty standard issue as well, with Riley being the exception. I'd rather see him as an entity all his own rather than as Miz's job absorber, because he's got great mic skills. While he'd definitely be the weakest worker on his brand in my estimation by far, I think this would be a great opportunity for him to grow.

Divas - Awesome Kong, Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, Nattie Neidhart, Gail Kim, Layla, Naomi, AJ Lee

Yes, this turns RAW's Divas division into the drizzling shits. No, I really don't care. This is the best group of women's wrestlers to prove once and for all that the WWE isn't a joke when it comes to the fairer sex getting down in the ring. Plus, there's serious dream match potential with Kong vs. Phoenix, Kong vs. Nattie and the TNA rehash feud that everyone seems to want to see, Kong vs. Kim. Naomi and AJ would get shots on the main roster here, as they both seemed like they were good on their season of NXT.

So, there you have it, the roster for Smackdown that would be most conducive to it being the "sports"/wrestling brand again. Again, this probably won't happen, but again, it's good to dream, isn't it?

Weekend Wrap-Up: NWA? SMH!

I jinxed him! I jinxed him! NOOO!
- Less than two months after he won the title, Colt Cabana dropped the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in Jacksonville on Saturday to The Sheik at a Pro Wrestling Fusion show. No, it's not the Detroit-area regional star and WWE Hall of Famer; he's been dead for 8 years now. It's also not the Iron Sheik, although I'd rather have seen Sheiky baby with this title (those without sarcasm meters, no, I wouldn't). Rather, this new Sheik's alter ego is Joey Machete. According to some prodding around the Intartubes, this Sheik has been trying to get at the NWA title for 18 months now. Even more prodding reveals that Machete is the head booker of Pro Wrestling Fusion. I'll have more on this later.

- CLASH Wrestling ran a show this weekend. I'd love to tell you about it, but I can't find results anywhere. If anyone attended and can give a report as to what happened, I'd appreciate it.

- You know I'm struggling for news items when I report on Twitter frenzies. Anyway, the latest hysteria came when the links to Beth Phoenix's and Rosa Mendes' profiles turned up empty links Saturday morning on WWE.com. Showing ultimate restraint and supreme logic, a good portion of the Twitterati assumed OH NO, OH NO! BETH PHOENIX HAS BEEN FUTURE ENDEAVORED! THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING! Turns out, in what could end up being a spoiler for tonight's draft, the two Divas were switched from Smackdown's superstar depository to RAW's, but the url wasn't changed to reflect that. You can't make this shit up.

Future Endeavors 4/21 Power Poll: My King of Trios Ballot Didn't Make Much of a Dent

Match of the year? MAYBE.

Welcome to yet another edition of the Future Endeavors Power Poll, a poll ranking wrestlers on a weekly basis based on how awesomely they performed or were portrayed on a Tuesday-to-Monday cycle. It is voted by a who's-who of wrestling bloggers, including my blogging Chav-bro Guerrer-bro, PizzaBodySlam. I will list the top ten, and then post and comment on my ballot. Here goes:

1. The Miz (Last Week: 2)
2. John Cena (4)
3. John Morrison (NR)
4. Sin Cara (6)
5. R-Truth (5)
6. Randy Orton (NR)
7. CM Punk (NR)
8. Christian (8)
9. Alberto Del Rio (3)
10. Dolph Ziggler (NR)

And now, my ballot:

1. El Generico - The Generic Luchador did some major work this weekend, throwing down three great matches in three nights at Chikara King of Trios. His Rey de Voladores final against the 1-2-3 Kid was one of the best matches of the year. Gotta give it up for El G. ¡Olé!

2. 1-2-3 Kid - Is this vote tinged with nostalgia? Maybe, but in my defense, nostalgia rules. Kid also turned in three really great performances in what could be his last active wrestling appearance ever. Major props to the man, the myth, the legend.

3. Christian - He won himself a battle royale and a chance to wrestle for the World Heavyweight Championship, if I'm not mistaken, his first ever major World title shot in WWE (The ECW Championship doesn't count).

4. Alberto del Rio - Smackdown's quickly becoming his show. Too bad he'll be moved over to RAW Monday, or at least that's what I'm thinking will happen.

5. Rey Mysterio - You don't have the best non-Chikara match of the week, win it and not get ranked. Mysterio deserved to be in the top 10 this week, dammit!

6. The Colony - They won the whole shebang this weekend after two years of being thwarted (2009, because FIST retired Worker Ant and kept them from having a full lineup and 2010, because Derek Sabato is a cheating bastard). Good job for Chikara's resident ants.

7. Mason Ryan - I can't be the only one who thoroughly enjoyed him nearly popping an aneurysm in his head wanting to skullfuck Randy Orton on RAW, could I have? Seriously, that was awesome.

8. Dolph Ziggler - He cut his hair... BOOO!!! He had a good match with Evan Bourne and looks to be getting a renewed push to the top of the card... YAY!!!

9. Eddie Kingston - War King had himself a good weekend too, wrestling in two really nice matches in two nights. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite workers. Love his style, and his match with Tozawa would have been the match of Night 3 if it weren't for Generico and Kid.

10. Manami Toyota - Seriously, she makes me want to hole up in my living room and watch hours on end of early '90s Joshi. Loved seeing her in the ring with the men, especially Dick Togo, and I thought her match with Madison Eagles was amazing on Night 3. Plus, I'm sucker for a gal who gets into the ring and actually smiles because she loves what she does. Seriously, the look on her face after QuackSaw Toyota beat SAT on Night 1? It was like she had just wrestled her first match how excited she seemed. I love that shit.

TWB Presents: The Wrestling Podcast

I was all set to comment on the whole Zack Ryder update on F4W Online, but you know what? That handsome devil Jason Mann beat me to it, and I really didn't feel like reiterating what he said with a rider of cynical disdain at Bryan Alvarez's cynicism (HOLY CYNICISM BATMAN). Besides, I think I ragged on the guy enough this week, and I don't want to, because I generally like him.

So, I will take this opportunity to make a huge, huge announcement regarding the blog and something new I'm going to be launching. In case you couldn't get the hint from the blog lately or my various Tweets, I'm going to be getting into the podcast game. Yep, much like many other of my blogging brethren, I will be taking the game to the Internet airwaves. What does this mean for TWB? Well, nothing.

I don't want the podcast to overpower what I do on here. I'm way more comfortable writing than talking. And I also don't want the podcast to become like my blog only in spoken word. So, what it will be is a bi-to-triweekly recording where I sit down and riff with people, whether they be in the business, have a blog or are just really cool people I know from real life/social media/message boards that I think would be great interviews. While the blog will be mainly focused on my insane ramblings and psychobabble about the professional wrestling business, the podcast will have more of a conversation feel and be more about what the guests think.

My guests may or may not be limited to people who strictly immerse themselves in the wrestling medium. I want to get people from all walks of coverage in here, just as long as they're wrestling fans and can at least talk some wrestling. But yeah, those of you who want to hear me talk for an hour about wrestling when I write 20 hours worth of reading material a week, prepare to be disappointed (and WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?). However, if you want to hear real interaction and stuff that veers GREATLY off the course of discussion (the best kinds of discussions, IMO), then this is for you.

I'm not tipping the cap as to who my first guest is going to be, but it'll be special, befitting a first podcast. Trust me, you'll enjoy it if you're of like mind to me. I'll be recording Monday, and unless I'm totally terrible at sound editing, it should be up Wednesday.

Follow Friday: 2nd City Saint

2011 TWB Draft Recap, Analysis and Other Stuff

The #1 overall pick... who followed?
Alright, for those who didn't attend the LiveBlog last night, or who don't have the patience to scroll through the entire transcript to see who was picked, here are the results from TWB's All-Time Draft last night. Before I start, I want to give a big shoutout to everyone who participated, either as drafters (Bill Baconhill, Dave McKinney, Sean McLaughlin, Billy Dunleavy, Rob Franklin, AnonymousJX, John Eibach and John's replacement after his computer crashed out, Collin "The Participator" Borrell) or as spectators providing a running commentary/outstanding trolling. Definitely made things awesome. Alright, so, without further ado, here are results, with the first five rounds receiving commentary from yours truly:

Round 1

1. TH - "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

I don't know if I surprised people by taking Austin first overall over guys like Flair, Hogan, Rocky, Michaels or the like, but I'd like to think this was a quality pick. I mean, Austin was the anchor for the biggest boom period in history, and it's not like he was a slouch before the WWF made him into their trademark superstar of the late '90s.

2. John - CM Punk

The first surprise pick comes with the second pick. I was almost certain Hogan or Flair would go here, but Punk? It was a bold choice albeit one that I thought was kind of a reach. But hey, Punk's career does seem to extrapolate to this level if he keeps going the way he's going.

3. Bacon - "Macho Man" Randy Savage

Another very surprising pick, although one that I think is more justifiable than the Punk choice. Savage was a multiple-time World Champion across two major feds, has had some of the hottest feuds ever, and really, is a guy that identifies with wrestling as much as anyone...

...except for the only two guys that he ever seemed to lose his World Titles to, Hogan and Flair. Shocking to see him go ahead of those two.

4. RF - Ric Flair

WOO! Flair drops to RF at #4, and honestly, if he had dropped any further, I might have called for the heads of everyone in this draft (except for me, because c'mon, AUSTIN AUSTIN BAH GAWD AUSTIN) to be examined. Don't let his TNA run fool you (although some will say he's far and away the best part of TNA right now); the man is a living legend.

5. Billy - Shawn Michaels

On one hand, Michaels, like the WWE talking point says he is, is one of the greatest in-ring performers, if not THE greatest of all-time. On the other hand, he was the top draw in the WWF at a time when the ship was sinking. Still, considering the picks that followed for Billy here, Michaels as a first round pick for his fed makes 100% sense.

6. AnonymousJX - Bret "The Hitman" Hart

The Best There Is, The Best There Was and the Best There Ever Will Be gets you to the 6th pick overall. A solid pick, even though I wouldn't have taken him over Hogan. Again, his drawing time on top was during a very down period for the WWF, BUT like Michaels, his strengths were always in the critical success of his matches. Plus, him leaving the WWF was pretty much the catalyst of the Attitude Era. Yeah, I know, but still.

7. Sean - "Rowdy" Roddy Piper

At this point, I imagine Hogan in the green room throwing chairs and posting snide Tweets from his Blackberry about how guys he carried or guys who didn't draw dick over him are getting drafted above him. Still, it's hard to argue with maybe the greatest promo of all-time. Yeah, he didn't hold any World Championships, but unlike the mythical green-room Hogan might believe, it's arguable that Hulkamania doesn't take off if it doesn't have Piper to play off of.

8. Dave - Jake "The Snake" Roberts

A controversial choice to end a controversial first round. Seriously, The Snake was an awesome performer, but above Hogan, The Rock, Harley Race, Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund and even John Cena? Not sure I buy that. Still, given Dave's later picks, it fits in with the flavor of the fed. Plus, he has a snake.

Round 2

9. Dave - Hulk Hogan

FINALLY, Hogan goes off the board and comes out of the green room cutting a promo about how no one knows talent yadda yadda yadda. This was perhaps the biggest shock in terms of how far talent like his dropped, but at the same time, in a room full of Internet smarks drafting? Yeah, maybe it wasn't so shocking.

10. Sean - Undertaker

Now it's The Rock's turn to sit in the green room as the best wrestler available as he sees Undertaker go ahead of him. Truth be told, I think there is a compelling argument for Taker over Rocky if you factor in longevity over peak. Taker's been a star for almost (over?) two decades. Rocky had a five year peak before he went off to make movies. Solid pick.

11. AnonymousJX - Eddie Guerrero

SOMEONE LIKES EDDIE AS MUCH AS I DO! This was a personal mark-out pick for me, because I love Eddie G. and think he belongs in the discussion for GOAT. I also think that his pick over Rock makes sense because Guerrero was a stone cold star in three different countries. I wouldn't have done it if Rocky were still on the board, but if things had shaken out differently, and Rock were gone here, I'd definitely go with Eddie.

12. Billy - Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat

Steamboat vs. Michaels as the top match? I like it. Again, fed direction has a lot to do with making this pick make sense (although I think The Rock is a great worker in his own right...)

13. RF - SKIPP'D

Rob's computer crapped out for the moment.

14. Bacon - Big Van Vader

A borderline pick here if you judge just his American work (although how can a two-time WCW Champion not get that kind of praise?), but when factoring in his gaijin work in Japan? Yeah, I can see him totally belonging here. Solid pick.

15. John - "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes

OH LAWDY LAWDY JOHN DONE GOT HIMSELF TO DUH PAY WINDUH! Great pick, and unlike his first pick that could have been a reach, this one is more of a value pick. I thought Big Dust would be gone by now.

16. TH - Harley Race

I was shocked at how Race lasted this long too, so I had to snap him up. Putting aside the intangible reasons why he belongs here (MUTTON CHOPS WORD LIFE), I don't think anyone who won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship six times in an era where that was an accomplishment rather than the average number of reigns should have fallen this far. I had to snap him up with the front end of my picks.

Continue for the next three rounds of analysis plus a list of the rest of the draftees plus the UFAsRound 3

17. TH - The Rock

Finally, The Rock, HAS COME BACK.... to a place other than the green room. I almost picked Jericho here, almost, but how could I pass up Rocky? I couldn't, that's how. I think he makes up for his lack of longevity with a blistering peak that ranks up there with anyone else in history.

17a. RF (make-up pick) - Chris Jericho

DAMN YOU ROB... err, a great pick for round three, actually. Jericho quietly has had himself a stellar career, and one that once he stops dancing and prancing will probably continue to have legacy added to it.

18. John - "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson

I liked this pick a lot more last night, but looking back at it? Arn may have been the ultimate sidekick, but is that worthy enough to have a high third round pick spent on you, especially over major draws in the World Championship scene like Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, John Cena, Kevin Nash or Triple H? (my skin burns for having typed that) I don't think so. Reach.

19. Bacon - "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase

Not to be confused with his ne'er-do-well son, that is. This is an interesting pick, if only because DiBiase has this weird place in the WWF's history. He was definitely a main event heel attraction, and he definitely was among the best mic men of all-time. However, he spent a lot of time on the injured list and never got to the top of the mountain (although in his defense, heels rarely ever got to the top of the mountain when he was active as a wrestler in WWF).

20. RF - Mick Foley

Now here's a value pick. Foley maybe the least appreciated WWF superstar ever, if only because his run came at a time when his star was outshone by Austin and Rocky. However, he had some very memorable matches with a lot of opponents, had maybe the single most memorable bump of that time, and his career before getting to Titan was still pretty solid. I mean, he did main event in WCW against Vader.

21. Billy - The Great Muta

In a draft that would pretty much become heavy on Japanese talent, Muta being the first pick among them is not surprising. He's the rare guy who found success on both sides of the Pacific, and he still packs 'em in today in Japan. I'm surprised he didn't go higher, to tell you the truth.

22. AnonymousJX - Brock Lesnar

Talk about peak vs. longevity... I'm torn on this pick. Yes, Lesnar was great when he was around, but that was for what, two years? He didn't even have the benefit of being on top during a boom period either. All the media frenzy he has generated came when he was in UFC, so that's really kind of counterproductive in a pro wrestling draft. In a vacuum, maybe this is a great pick, but with Bruno, Andre the Giant, Backlund, Sting, Luger, Trips, Nash and Thesz still on the draft board? Eh... I'm not sure.

23. Sean - Ultimo Dragon

Speaking of reaches... then again, I don't think Dragon here is that bad of a reach. If this were strictly a junior-heavyweight draft, then this would be a value pick. Then again, Sean did end up going after more junior heavyweights later on, so this kind of makes sense.

24. Dave - Andre the Giant

Big value pick here. Andre was the best special attraction of all-time. With Hogan and Roberts already in tow to be in the World title picture, taking a guy like Andre to fill out main events away from the strap is an excellent move. Hell, Dave could even recreate the WrestleMania III main event if he wanted to.

Round 4

25. Dave - Randy Orton

Then he had to go and screw up his mojo by picking Randy Snoreton. Okay, my biases aside, this is an okay if questionable pick. I know Dave hates Triple H, and as one guy who definitely let his biases influence whom he picked, I can empathize, but I'm surprised he didn't pick a guy like Sting, Luger or one of the Funk boys.

26. Sean - Honky Tonk Man

I like Sean, so I'm not going to rip this pick apart...

...too much *devil smiley* Yeah, this is the classic example of a guy who holds the belt for a long time and yet wasn't really a great wrestler behind that reign. Honky probably should have been drafted, but not this high.

27. AnonymousJX - Tiger Mask I (Satoru Sayama)

This one was out of leftfield to me, but in a good way. I didn't think Tiger Mask would go this high, but you can't deny his influence on the current scene, as he and DK really defined what the junior heavyweight style would become. Great pick. JX has one of my favorite feds so far outside of mine, the Lesnar pick notwithstanding.

28. Billy - Kurt Angle

No, Billy doesn't get the mysterious Twitter hacker here *devil smiley*. Anyway, I think this is a great value pick too. Angle may have taken a hit in his waning WWE days and his TNA run, but when he was on, he was a great worker in his prime. Again, he fits in with the oeuvre of Billy's fed.

29. RF - Triple H

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME! Trips fell further than he should have, but I'm not complaining about it.

30. Bacon - Sting

I like this pick. While Sting has had a lot of success, I feel like he's the epitome of a fourth round pick. Always the foil, never really great as a standalone, but in the scheme of things, those guys are needed too. Plus, all the hardware he accumulated doesn't hurt.

31. John - SKIPP'D

John's computer crapped out, and from here on out, his picks were assumed by Collin.

32. TH - Bruno Sammartino

Yes, the REAL Living Legend fell all the way here. In a way, I'm not surprised given the lack of historical perspective among SOME modern fans. I'll cop to never seeing a Bruno match, but at the same time, I can't deny his drawing power or longevity. Plus, I need a "good guy" top face to counterbalance my other top face, the Chaotic Neutral fan favorite Steve Austin.

Round 5 - Dedicated Tag Team Round

33. TH - The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal)

I hope you think this is as much a no-brainer as I did when I picked them.

33a. Collin - make-up pick - Chris Benoit

I'm not sure I can objectively rate this pick due to how I see Familymurder McChairshottotheskull, but hey, you can't deny he was a great wrestler.

34. Collin - Curt Hennig and Eddie Gilbert

This was my favorite pick of the whole draft. Collin effectively got two awesome guys in one fell swoop through the savviness of realizing that they were at one time a regular team. Well-played, sir.

35. Bacon - Steiner Bros. (Rick and Scott)

Bacon worried that his WCW bias was showing through here. I reminded him that the Steiners did have that awesome cage match on SNME against Money Inc. back in the mid-'90s. Anyway, solid pick here, as the Steiners are probably 1a in the discussion of tag teams to the Roadies' 1. Plus, if needed, he can break the team up and have Scott move up the card if needed.

36. RF - Outsiders (Kevin Nash and Scott Hall)

This is the ultimate dual-threat pick. Nash is underrated as a draw in the mid-'90s, I think, although really, if Hart and Michaels get overrated for their drawing power, how much impact could Nash have had? Either way, their jumping to WCW really made shit REAL in the Monday Night Wars. Good as a tag and better solo.

37. Billy - Edge and Christian

Another solid dual-threat pick. Edge's resume speaks for itself, and Christian might have a non-TNA promoted World Title on his mantel after May 1st. They were always my favorite team amongst the 2000-01 TLC frenzy, and I think they're a solid, top-five-of-all-time tag team, or at least in the discussion.

38. AnonymousJX - Kings of Wrestling (Claudio Castagnoli and Chris Hero)

I know my meme in the LiveBlog last night was "THAT WAS A BOLD PICK", but I think this seriously was a bold pick. Bypassing the older tag teams from days of yore that may not have aged as well (although I'd say this is a reach over Demolition at the very least), JX picked maybe the one team from the modern indies that can stand up to other eras' best. Yeah, the Briscoes teamed longer and have more of an inreach, but there are many out there, myself included, who'll defend to the death the quality of tag matches by the Kings over the quantity of the Briscoes. Again, I'm not sure I'd have made this pick with Demolition, the Dudleys, Harlem Heat, the Hardys and the British Bulldogs still on the board, but all things considered, this was still a bold and solid pick.

39. Sean - Demolition (Ax and Smash)

An unabashed imitation of the Road Warriors (created after Vince couldn't land the real magilla), Demolition proved that the imitation could come close to the real thing (and in the minds of some people, Jason Mann included, exceed it). Excellent pick-up by Sean here.

40. Dave - The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael "PS" Hayes and Terry "Bam Bam" Gordy)

There were a few incarnations of the Birds, but this one was probably the best pick for a draft like this. Not only does it cockblock anyone going for the Miracle Violence Connection (Gordy and Dr. Death), but it secures a damn impressive team for the South Atlanta Wrestling fed. Very unsurprising for Dave (whose handle at A1 is "FreebirdSTF"), but very solid pick.

That's it for the armchair analysis, because if I write anymore, my eyes will bleed. Here's the recap of the rest of the draft though:
