Friday Five: Monday Night RAW

Twenty years ago TODAY, RAW got its start, so time to commemorate...

1. What is the best match in RAW history?

2. Buy or sell: the Manhattan Center RAWs had the best atmosphere.

3. Which opening theme song was your favorite?

4. How are you enjoying the move to three hours, and could you even imagine watching a version of RAW that was only one hour anymore?

5. What is your most memorable RAW moment in your time watching it?

  1. 1. What is the best match in RAW history?

Wow. Tough choice there. Not sure that I could really pick one as there are so many from different eras and also a lot of "important" matches that aren't really very good in retrospect (not to mention all of the great matches I'm sure that I've completely forgotten about). I still love the Perfect/Flair match from the first few months of the show, but it's showing some age. The Michaels/Cena hour long London match is sort of a forgotten classic. Then there's the Bulldog/Owen European Title tourney final & HHH/Austin vs. The Chrises all the way to Punk/Bryan from this past year...to tough for me to pick. I'd have to go back and pick a match of the year for each year to widow it down and that will never happen, so I'll just go with The Rock vs. Eddie Guerrero just because.

    2. Buy or sell: the Manhattan Center RAWs had the best atmosphere.

Sell. The show was pretty goofy in those days. If they brought it back there a couple times a year now or ran it from there in 97 maybe, but I think you'd probably run into the same mutant fan problem that makes TNA really hard to watch.

    3. Which opening theme song was your favorite?

RAW IS LIKE A THORN IN YOUR EYE! (or whatever that was)

    4. How are you enjoying the move to three hours, and could you even imagine watching a version of RAW that was only one hour anymore?

2 hours is the sweet spot. Haven't made it through a 3 hour version without liberal use of the fast forward button.

    5. What is your most memorable RAW moment in your time watching it?

Hmmm, another tough one. HHH/Jericho is up there. As is Rock talking about a mutant Detroit freak fish. The Owen and Benoit episodes for similar but distinctly different reasons. The Nitro simulcast. Those are the ones jumping out at me.

    1. Jesus Bill, great writing there. That would be "too tough for me to pick" and "winnow" it down...

  2. The Manhattan Center Raws were great, but I'll take any modern Chicago show over them.

Having been to a few live during the Papa Roach theme era, I have to pick that just for the whole crowd singing along with the whoa oh ohhh part every time. That was rad, even if "I just wanna be loved" was kind of a weird lyric for being a wrestling show theme.

It was tainted even by the end of that night's show, but the segment where ECW became part of the invasion angle is still the thing that made me jump up and down and scream at my TV the most out of anything. My love affair with the original ECW was brief, as I only found it the night ECW on TNN started, but those memories were fresh at the time and bringing it back seemed like the greatest possible thing. Too bad how the rest of that summer turned out, though.

  3. 1. Since it was around the time I started watching, the TLC match with Kane vs The Dudleys vs Rob Van Dam and Jeff Hardy vs Chris Jericho and Christian
    2. Buy. Better than just a normal arena.
    3. The one from 2000-2001
    4. Could not watch a one hour Raw. Still wish they were two hours but at least the three hours gives me time to leave and come back, not missing much cause they show like 10 million recap videos.
    5. The Eddie Guerrero episode for sure.
