Friday Five: The Royal Rumble

It's this Sunday!

1. What was your personal favorite Rumble moment ever?

2. Buy or sell: John Cena is an absolute lock to win the Rumble match this Sunday.

3. Who do you want to be a "surprise" entrant this year?

4. Buy or sell II: The Rumble match should always go on last.

5. Who is the greatest Rumble performer of all-time?

12 comments:

  1. 1. Hurricane preparing for simultaneous chokeslams on Stone Cold and Triple H. For half a second, it was the greatest thing ever.

    2. Sell. Likely favorite, sure. Absolute lock, no.

    3. Mikey Whipwreck. To be fair, maybe you don't want to start a question to me with "who do you want."

    4. Buy. It's the name of the show, it's one of the biggest matches of the year, and it's almost always a lot of fun.

    5. Tough to argue against Stone Cold...three wins, and was the last man in a fourth.

  2. 1. Ric Flair winning the WWF title at the 1992 Rumble. I'm a huge mark for Flair and it was the first year someone that early in the contest went all the way. Woooo!

    2. Sell. Like Luke said, Cena is surely a favorite, but I don't think he'll win. I believe Ziggler will eliminate him to avenge the recent losses on Raw.

    3. Adrian Neville. The artist formerly known as PAC is without a doubt my favorite guy in developmental right now. I met him last year at an indy show, class act. I wish nothing but the best for him.

    4. Buy. Again, I agree with Luke. I hate when they don't end with the Rumble match.

    5. Good question. So many names pop into my head, but I think I'm going to go with Shawn Michaels. I'm not a huge fan, but respect what he's done in the business and having won back to back Rumbles and starting off as number one the first time he did it is impressive to me.

  3. 1. "With a tear in my eye, this is the greatest moment in my life." Do I need to say more.
    2. Unfortunately buy
    3. Bob Backlund and Vader
    4. Sell. You can have the championship match afterwards, if you have a meaningful build for the Rumble match. This year, you need it at the end, because build is absolutely week.
    5. Ric Flair

  4. 1. The Flair moment that Kirkd mentioned.
    2. Buy. I had the realization the other night that Cena was going to win the Rumble and The Rock was going to beat CM Punk. Unfortunately, Rock-Cena II: Electric Boogaloo is too good to pass up, especially with the championship on the line.
    3. Sara Del Rey or Rachel Summerlyn. What? It would be a surprise!
    4. Buy.
    5. The Warlord.

  5. 1. Shawn Michaels' first win when he DIDN'T TOUCH THE GROUND AND THANK GOD WE HAD A CAMERA THERE TO CAPTURE IT ALL NOT LIKE THE PREVIOUS YEAR WITH LEX & BRET... sorry. Teenage me had a lot of feels about that one and it still makes me happy.

    2. Sell... I can't articulate more on this because it will make me angry if we have to see Rock/Cena II: Electric Boogaloo.

    3. Das Wunderkind Alex Wright. Just because I'm always waiting for a wild Das Wunderkind to appear. Imagine my heartbreak when we found out who Fandangooooooo was. No Das Wunderkind for me...

    4. Buy. I think they should end with the Rumble match.

    5. Shawn Michaels or Stone Cold or Flair... nah... the answer is Shawn Michaels.

  6. 1. Kofi's handstand/JoMo's Parkour/Attempted Double Hurri-chokeslam. I've actually never had my favorite at any given time when the Rumble, so I'm devoid of that kind of moments.

Also in 92 I hated Ric Flair, so there was that.

    2. Sell. Rock/Cena II will happen, but there's so many ways to get there that don't involve Cena winning the rumble that it's a missed opportunity to put someone over if they have Cena win it.

    3. Richie Steamboat, to uphold the family honor when Wade's in ring.

    4. Buy. It's the most important match of the year in WWE parlance. HAS to be the main event.

    5. Shawn Michaels, Austin, or Kane.

  7. 1. Rey Mysterio winning - I young then and it was one of the first that I remember watching live. I just felt like it was a magical moment considering the death of Eddie and all.

    2. Buy - No matter how little I want him to win, I think it will happen.

    3. Marcus Cor Von - Probably one of the more unlikely picks, but I would mark out if it were to happen.

    4. Buy - Like others have said, it is the name of the PPV. It should end the show, because it is what the show should be all about in my opinion.

    5. Kane - Although he has never won the match before, he always makes a huge impact.

  8. 1. What was your personal favorite Rumble moment ever?
Undertaker being eliminated by Maven and going absolutely crazy.

    2. Buy or sell: John Cena is an absolute lock to win the Rumble match this Sunday.

Sell. Remember how it was a lock how Jericho would win it last year?

    3. Who do you want to be a "surprise" entrant this year?

Honestly, Goldberg. Realistically, Vader or Kevin Nash.

    4. Buy or sell II: The Rumble match should always go on last.

    Buy.

    5. Who is the greatest Rumble performer of all-time?

I haven't watched too many Rumbles, so based on statistics, Kane.

  9. 1. I haven't seen enough to make an informed pick, but I think Punk holding court was great. (I think that was 2010.)

    2. Light buy. I think he probably will, but I'm holding out for someone else.

    3. El Generico (as El Generico) or Sara del Rey. But if we're really dream booking, Jack Swagger of Mars.

    4. Sell. Put it on whenever. Sometimes the main event should be something else.

    5. Again, haven't seen enough to make an informed decision.

  10. 1. HBK knocking Davey Boy off the top rope while he was celebrating. I was a huge Bulldog mark back in the day and that was one of my first HOLY SHIT moments in wrestling.

    2. Buy. Fuckin sucks, doesn't it?

    3. Sabu

    4. Sell. If the title match is a better draw then that should go last.

    5. I always think of HBK when I think of the Rumble so I'll say him.

  11. 1. I'd like to be different but it really is: Flair win + promo afterwards.
    2. Sell. I'm trying to be an optimist here.
    3. Ernest "The Cat" Miller, because I miss him so.
    4. Buy. It's the main attraction.
    5. My initial thought: HBK. Checking the statline, it's HBK.

  12. 1. Austin "stealing" the 97 Rumble. Just fit that character at the time and his feud with Hart, and lead to an amazing match at WM 13.

    2. Sell. I honestly don't think he's going to win it.

    3. Billy Gunn...I almost think this will happen, honestly. Or maybe X-Pac.

    4. Buy. As much as I always think the title should go on last, this is the one event that I will step down from that on. The event is named after the match, for goodness sake.

    5. Gonna go with HBK on this one, with a slight edge on Kane.
