From the Archives: Bret Hart (c) vs. Davey Boy Smith, SummerSlam '92

The only time the Intercontinental Championship headlined a pay-per-view when there was also a WWF/E Championship match on the card was SummerSlam '92. There were extenuating circumstances, obviously. Davey Boy Smith was returning home to England to wrestle for his first singles title. It was against his brother-in-law too. The lore of this match was that Bret Hart and Smith had gone over what they wanted to do the day before, but then the Bulldog showed up at Wembley the day of the show all cracked out and in no condition to remember what he was supposed to do. I don't know how true that is at all, but if it was, man, that makes Hart's performance here all the more epic. Regardless of trappings though, this really was one of my favorite matches growing up.
