Women to Rule the Next Takeover Special

Let's do it again, this time in the main event

Yesterday's NXT tapings were quite eventful. Kana made her NXT debut under the name Asuka, a tribute to Crush Gal and joshi legend Lioness Asuka. The Dusty Classic progressed further, moving towards the October 7 Takeover special where it will conclude. However, the finals will not be the main event of that show. Instead, the biggest news from the slate of show tapings was that Bayley will defend her NXT Women's Championship against Sasha Banks in a 30 minute ironman (ironwoman? ironhuman?) match in the main event. Banks and Bayley will be the first women to headline a WWE special event ever, so this is a pretty historic announcement.

NXT officials haven't been shy about letting women headline the weekly show or house shows. Banks was in the main event of the first Philadelphia house show against Charlotte. While headlining a Takeover event is the next logical conclusion in the elevation of women's wrestling in the WWE's developmental/premium brand, the move still feels historic and important. Banks and Bayley just came off a match at Takeover: Brooklyn that was lauded as the greatest women's match in WWE history and on the short list of best matches of the year, and many people considered it the true main event of the show anyway. Now they'll get the actual show-ending slot.
