This Week in DVR: Emasculations This Way

Go to sleep, Johnny C...

I watched what I couldn't watch live on my DVR. Here's what stood out:

Matches

Tyler Reks vs. Chris Masters on Superstars - This was a pretty neat knock down, drag out big man match. Again, it was Masters carrying the action with Reks following studiously behind. I thought the highlight here was Masters' countering out of the Dragon sleeper with constant movement and elbows. I thought the finish was a bit contrived looking, but it was still a nice match.

Primo Colon and Zack Ryder vs. Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov, non-title match, on Superstars - I really liked this match. For one, DZP is so good at heel isolation tactics, and Santino is so good at playing face in peril. They got the formula right, using Kozlov for the big-popping hot tag instead of the other way around. I also liked earlier in the match where they did the spot holding Santino in place for a top rope move, and he dragged Primo into the way of a leaping Ryder. Really, really smart wrestling.

Edge, John Cena, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, R-Truth and John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler, CM Punk, Sheamus, Wade Barrett, Kane and Drew McIntyre on Smackdown - This was a fun match. Rey did a lot of good FIP work, and both Barrett and Sheamus especially worked him over well. It devolved into the predictable finisher-mania that these multi-man matches in WWE end up as, but I liked the order of them. Cena took a GTS, Orton took a Future Shock. It was refreshing to see the big guys show that vulnerability. Fun curtain jerker, even if what happened after the finish blew chunks.

Shows

ROH on HDNet - Man, what a boring show this week. The matches were off and the show centered around the two worst mic men in the ROH main event, Roderick Strong and Homicide. Seriously, what's the point of having Truth Martini there if he's not cutting promos for Strong? Not everyone should talk. Ugh. Just a throwaway show.

Superstars - This was a really good show this week. Normally, I don't like wholesale replays from RAW, but in this case, I'll make an exception since that Rock promo may have been the biggest thing to happen in wrestling in a long, long time. One thing that baffles me though, they seem to be protecting Masters week in and week out. I'm not complaining about that, and yeah, they need hot talent to be on the C-show. But shouldn't they be building more than a few guys for that role, grooming guys who are over to move onto the other shows to try and spark the midcard on those shows. I dunno, I would love to see Masters get a run with the IC Title, but maybe I'm just shouting into the abyss on that.

Impact - So, Spike TV is not the head booking body for TNA? Ugh. No continuity from week to week. I don't know, I'm just sick and tired of seeing Eric Bischoff as the main figure with the most airtime each week. Seriously, what good is it doing TNA to have him there?

Smackdown - The first half-hour of the show was pretty good, mainly because it had the big 12-man tag team match. The stuff with Miz, Kofi and Alberto del Rio was alright too, even if the match was a little on the sloppy side. Other than that, it was a flat episode at best and just a terrible burial at worst. Dolph Ziggler got his nuts chopped off in the worst way. I mean, there's one thing to have him get his comeuppance, but another to treat the World Championship with such disregard, have corrupt and played out authority figures dominate and then have Ziggler eat two pinfalls from the same guy to bookend the show. Ugh, it's almost like they don't want to have too many good main event stars. Oh well. The lone upside from all this is that it gives the people something to guess on with the empty spot in Smackdown's elimination chamber tomorrow night.
