Lawler Needed Defibrillation, Has No Signs of Brain Damage

Showing signs of recovery

Jerry "The King" Lawler actually died from his heart attack Monday night on RAW. He showed no vital signs for about 20 minutes, and it took EMTs seven defibrillator shocks to get his heart working again. When he got to the hospital, they found a 98-percent blockage in his artery, which required the installation of a stent-balloon system.

Doctors feared that the 20 minutes Lawler exhibited no signs of life that he'd have brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. CT scans, however, showed that there was no apparent brain damage. Lawler is not out of the woods yet, but it's looking more and more likely that he will recover from this.

Again, it bears repeating how lucky Lawler was that he had his attack at a WWE event and not, say, a couple of days before when he was wrestling in Aruba. The difference in response time and quality of care between a third-world country and Canada/under the WWE banner would have been the difference between day and the heat death of the Universe. We'd be mourning the King if it had happened a few days prior. Also, take time to thank the people you know in EMS, because they really do straddle the line between life and death in their jobs.
