Face Status - MELTED: PWG 2012 DDT4 Review

You know the drill. Also, buy this show at Highspots.

Highlights:
  • The RockNES Monsters overcame Brian Cage-Taylor doing squat thrusts with Johnny Yuma while giving him a delayed vertical suplex to defeat The Fightin' Taylor Boys in a first round match.
  • Future Shock took out the Dynasty when they put Scorpio Sky away with a combo Samoan Drop/superkick.
  • Roderick Strong, Sami Callihan, El Generico, and Willie Mack (the latter two known as "Two Husky Black Guys") battled so hard that they shifted the ring. Mack and Generico would get the win with a bodyslam/ace crusher by Mack into a brainbuster by Generico on Strong.
  • After the match, Callihan answered Kevin Steen's open challenge for the PWG World Championship for later in the show.
  • In the final first round match, the Super Smash Brothers scored the upset on the Young Bucks when Stupefied reversed the first leg of More Bang for Your Buck into a crucifix pin.
  • In the first semifinal, Two Husky Black Guys took down the RockNES Monsters when Willie Mack reversed Johnny Yuma into an Emerald Frosion.
  • The Super Smash Bros. punched their ticket into the finals over Future Shock via the Fatality on Kyle O'Reilly.
  • Kevin Steen and Sami Callihan beat the ever-loving crap out of each other, but it was a package piledriver that allowed Steen to retain.
  • In the tournament finals, the Super Smash Bros. got the win via Fatality on El Generico. After the match, the Young Bucks came in to pick the bones, but were chased off by Kevin Steen.

General Observations:
  • Even before the first match began, both the Monsters and Taylor Boys got dueling chants. SoCal loves its native sons (and they should).
  • Cage-Taylor gave Goodtime an Attitude Adjustment right into the apron within the first five minutes of the match. Early and often... I like it.
  • No, seriously, Cage-Taylor was doing squat thrusts with Yuma while in the suplex position. That man is not human. He's not human at all.
  • At one point, the Monsters were going for Weapons Grade Bolonium (i.e., Goodtime had Yuma in the fireman's carry), and Cage-Taylor, giving no fucks, straight up gave Goodtime a German suplex with Yuma still on the shoulders.
  • Explosive Amnesia is what the move the Monsters used to finish off Cage-Taylor is called. It's an enzugiri-assisted ace crusher.
  • The fans trolled Joey Ryan, with his Angels-themed trunks, with a "LA DODGERS!" chant.
  • DOUBLE dragon screw by Kyle O'Reilly on both members of the Dynasty. Whoa.
  • "Just like Tamina Snuka." -- Kevin Steen after an Adam Cole Superfly Splash. Kevin Steen for Announcer of the Year?
  • Can we take just a little bit of time to bask in the awesomeness that is the team name "Two Husky Black Guys?" Especially when it prompted El Generico to throw up "WEST SIIIIIIDE" signs all night long?
  • Sami Callihan wrestled - and always wrestles - like he was on speed. Seriously, does that guy have a battery pack inside him?
  • Nice Human Tornado homage by both members of the Husky Black Guys with the boot scrapes in the corner followed up by a split kick to the groin. (remember, Tornado and Generico formed Two Skinny Black Guys).
  • I don't know what it took to get Mack to take that rope burn on his junk while straddling the middle rope but, uh, let's just say I hope Strong treated on the post-show trip to In 'n Out.
  • Apron shinbreaker by Strong. OF COURSE that's his apron move.
  • "Willie Mack with the Andrew Bynum!" I don't even know what that means, Excalibur, but I like it.
  • EVEREST BACK SUPLEX. Callihan is a beast.
  • The Smash Bros. gave the Bucks a taste of their own medicine posing after their first exchange. I think I like their pose better than the Bucks'.
  • Epic sell alert: Matt Jackson took a hard chop from Uno, put on the Mr. Yuckface, and started wiping his chest off like it had detritus on it.
  • Stupefied busted out a Dragon suplex where the impact landed right on the crown of Matt's head. I call it a Dragon brainbuster.
  • The count did seem a little fast from Rick Knox, which I hear ended up becoming a thing later on in the year.
  • Into the semifinals! Yuma tried to taunt Generico by saying ¡OlĂ©! The crowd booed him. Goodtime even ditched him on the apron in shame.
  • Mack had Goodtime in the corner and got him two for flinching.
  • "I wonder who has the tan advantage." -- Roderick Strong, musing about who had more melanin going between Stupefied and Kyle O'Reilly.
  • "EVIL UNO!" chants were a thing.
  • Sami Callihan has to be the bravest man in the world, because he spat in Kevin Steen's face in Southern California. That takes huevos.
  • Of course, his payment for that was getting tossed into a whole mess of chairs.
  • Double eye gouge! They both used cheating at the same time. How adorable.
  • Steen is the probably the most secure in his manhood, because he loves throwing kisses to other wrestlers. Yep, he laid a smacker on Callihan.
  • Steen and Callihan jousted on the apron, ending in Steen dropping him with a Michinoku Driver. I'm not even fazed by this anymore, PWG. In fact, I'm disappointed when there'sa match with no apron spots.
  • Steen finished the match with a LEAPING package piledriver. That's how you know shit was real.
  • The Smash Bros. posing was answered by the Two Husky Black Guys going all WEST SIIIIIIIIIDE.
  • "El Generico is still a virgin at age 32." Kevin Steen, keeping the firest stoked.
  • Epic sell alert 2: Generico twitching like a fish after taking a big move.
  • The Smash Bros. did their GET OVER HERE on the apron on Generico, thus initiating them fully into PWG. Dos completed the Exploder portion of it by throwing Generico off the apron into Mack, who was recovering on the floor. At this point, I was beyond spent.
  • After the match, the Bucks attacked both teams and accused Rich Knox of a fast count in the first match. Again, keep that in mind for future PWG events in '12.
  • After chasing the Bucks off, Steen put over everyone on the mic but Generico. Again, keeping the fires stoked.

Match of the Night: Johnny Goodtime and Johnny Yuma vs. Brian Cage-Taylor and Ryan Taylor - The opening match sets the tone for the show most times. A lot of times, it's the slowest match, the one where the competitors feel out the crowd, see what floats, and end up building to a minor crescendo that acts as an appetizer for the meatier matches. The RockNES Monsters and Fightin' Taylor Boys took that formula, took a shit on it, and wiped their asses with the tickets.

The action started fast and furious, and it didn't stop until the match was over. There were planchas and pescados. There were suplexes and springboards. Cage-Taylor did squat thrusts on a vertical suplex attempt and hit both guys with a German at the same time. Yuma broke out what I think may have been the first ever fisherman's suplex out of nowhere. Double team moves all over the place. It was beautiful.

RockNES finished the match with a move they called Explosive Amnesia, but if you forget this match after watching it, there's something wrong with you. On what may have been the best complete card of the year, it was the opening match that shone the brightest.

Overall Thoughts: DDT4 last year was probably the best card I saw, top to bottom, all year because of the story told throughout the event, of the Kings of Sexual Intercourse going all the way to the finals only to get the Young Bucks dicking them out of a title. This year, DDT4 was the best card I've seen so far because every match was balls-out, insane, and eminently satisfying.

There wasn't much of a story going through the event, even if there were seeds planted for the Young Bucks vs. Rick Knox angle that would run through the summer. If anything, it was about displaying the tag team scene in PWG, or at the very least the caliber of the tag team matches the promotion puts on. Whether it was a match between two native tandems like RockNES and the Taylor Boys or pitting two import teams like Future Shock and the Smash Bros. against each other, it all worked.

So yeah, all that being said, I had to stick my face in the freezer after watching this, because my face was sufficiently melted. Just when you think PWG can't top itself, it goes and top itself. Get this DVD or video download. Yesterday. DO IT.
