This Week in Off-Topic: Short Missives on Current Topics

Oh Lord, no, why did you?

Thoughts in paragraph form:

  • I still stand by what I wrote about Bob Costas being off-base in his tone following Jovan Belcher. That wasn't a gun problem, it was a domestic abuse problem. Sandy Hook Elementary? That was a gun problem. Well, it was one of the problems. The state of mental health treatment in this country is awful, but the ease of access for automatic and semi-automatic weapons, even for someone who believes that the Second Amendment is vitally important to the populace, is grotesque and awful.

The key phrase in that Amendment is "well-regulated." I don't think we need to start taking everyone's guns away, but we do need to explore what "well-regulated" means. Also, the fact that people have started jumping at investigating video games and movies instead of actual gun ownership is pretty appalling and is like looking at installing a pacemaker to treat pancreatic cancer. Only in this country can innocuous forms of entertainment be blamed for stuff that the gun lobbies and our infrastructure to help treat and aid mental illness have created.
  • No one should be surprised that professional troll Rob Parker did his job. Instead of being aghast at him questioning Robert Griffin III's "blackness," how about we stop paying attention to troll journalists and start consuming real analysis?
  • There is no "War on Christmas." No one is saying that you, as a Christian, can't keep the Christ in the holiday. The fact is, it has a secular element that is tangible and undeniable.

Also, if someone wishes you "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays," they're not making a statement either way. If they are, they're probably assholes, but that's not the point. The point is, if someone wishes you a happy greeting no matter what the verbiage, the correct answer is to warmly reciprocate. It's the time of the year when we're supposed to be happy and peaceful.
  • Evander Kane tweeting a picture of himself holding stacks of $100 bills was stupid, tone-deaf, and arrogant. However, it still doesn't change the fact that the NHL lockout is mostly the fault of the owners. In fact, I can bet you of all labor disputes in history, 99.9% of them were all probably the fault of management not wanting to pay a fair wage. But that's neither here nor there.
  • I don't know who said it first (it might have been Dan Levy), but the best way to curb drunk driving is to charge everyone who drives over the limit with attempted murder. That'll get people to call a cab right quick.
Sorry if I got a bit preachy, but nothing else seems to be working to get points across.
