This Week in Off-Topic: A Short Note on Johnny Manziel

Lay off Johnny Football, mkay?

Here's what I know about Johnny Manziel getting sent home from Manning Quarterback Camp:
  1. He was sent home from Manning Quarterback Camp.
That's pretty much it. I wasn't with him the night before, so I don't know if he had too much to drink or anything to drink at all. I wasn't bunking with him, so I don't know if he was hungover or if he just overslept like claimed. I just know he got sent home.

Of course, the media was restrained in its collective response, and it exercised judgment. AHAHAHAHA, nah, just kidding. So many people weighed in, most of which were either chastising the young man or reacting to the said chastisements. Many who took Manziel to task for this and for everything else he's been criticized for in his tumultuous first year in the national spotlight share the same profile. They're crusty old men.

Now, there are merits to old men taking a young kid to the woodshed like this. It's life advice, right? Well, I'm sure these guys appreciated when the geezers of their era told them not to be "unprofessional" as young adults. Except my guess is that the probability of them always doing what they were told was pretty slim. Just a hunch.

Honestly, the cacophony surrounding Manziel is unnecessary. He hasn't committed anything felonious. Nothing he's done has even come close to being troublesome. Kids drink. They get pissed off on Twitter. They oversleep.

So, my advice is this. Unless you're Manziel's parents, Kevin Sumlin, or anyone else who happens to be in guardianship of Manziel, don't worry about what he does in his spare time. He's a kid. Kids are kids. Let him make his own mistakes and learn from them, and worry about his game when football season rolls around.
