Throwback Thursday: An Eye for an Eye

How does one turn the Road Warriors, a tag team who became popular because of how destructive and violent and ornery they were, heel? Well, the answer to that question would be "not successfully," but Dusty Rhodes tried in 1988, right before Starrcade. The Roadies, after defeating the Midnight Express for the NWA World Tag Team Championships, decided they didn't need Rhodes' help anymore, so they jumped him, took a spike from their shoulder pads, and tried to gouge Big Dust's eye out. The stunt didn't really work; Rhodes was fired because he violated the "no blading" policy handed down from TBS, and the fans kept cheering the Roadies anyway. However, before he was sent packing up to his Vince McMahon-issued polka dots, Rhodes cut one final promo on the Warriors, promising that as long as he was breathin' that he'd come looking to take from Hawk and Animal what they tried to take from him, daddy.
