Guys, We Need to Talk About John Cena

And don't get me started on his commandeering of the color pink

John Cena sometimes gets a very bad rap from wrestling fans out of his demographic (read, skirts and kids). The truth is, he can be personable, he's a good-to-great wrestler and he seems to have a sense of humor about himself that some people who get to his position often lack. Lately though, the guy has been insufferable. Like, really insufferable to the point where I have no hope that he'll bring worth to the segment he's in. I don't know if it's the divorce or something else, but he needs to be stopped.

His lame comedy has always rubbed me the wrong way as it has most people. Last night it was most insufferable because he used it to reinforce stupid body part-related insults about Daniel Bryan and Antonio Cesaro. For the record, despite being called a "goat face," Bryan is the most popular guy in the room, so there's hope for Cesaro and his pepperoni nipples yet. Pairing that with the current, annoying storyline where he is Julia Roberts saying MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE over and over again as reason for his constant stream of title shots and why CM Punk still isn't a legit Champion despite being Champion for almost a year, and it's enough to want to punch a baby holding a puppy.

I seriously can't even defend him anymore, and we're entering dangerous territory because of it. It's clear he's not going away any time soon. In reality, he can't. He can't just hand the mantel to Punk and leave. WWE needs an ensemble on top right now. He needs to be around, but in this form, it's going to be trying. I don't even know what will be more annoying, Cena or having to agree with a legion of haters whose vindication will rival that of the Boston sports fans of the last decade in smugness.

With the change in writers, there's hope that last night was the last time we would have seen bad Cena, but it's entirely possible that Cena's one of those guys who's above being scripted. Our long national nightmare has no signs of letting up. It's a shame, because after Cena's initial promo, the show was gangbusters. I don't wanna be one of those guys who hates on the top guy because he's the top guy, but Cena really gives me no reason right now to think he deserves my praise.
