Weekend Wrap-Up: If You Just Close Your Eyes

DEAD
- Bigger than anything that happened this weekend in the wrestling world, US forces captured and killed Osama bin Laden last night, or last week, or whenever. Regardless of when it happened, it was definitely one of the culminations of the long war to gain justice for the heinous acts of genocidal terrorism to happen on September 11th, 2001. A big thanks goes out from me to all our men and women in uniform who made this happen. Our military does all the shit that we don't want to do and that helps keep us free. That being said, this is not the end of our problems, and in addition to hunting down the rest of al-Qaeda, I hope that our elected officials realize that prevention is the best weapon against terrorism, and that our foreign policy must change so that other peoples have no reason to rise up and become the next Osama.

- Now that that's out of the way, Extreme Rules, everyone! Two new World-level Champions were crowned last night. The less-surprising one was John Cena, finally ending The Miz's reign of awesome in a move some called anti-climactic, but what I call meh-inducing. However, the other new Champ is a real crowd-pleaser. Yep, CHRISTIAN won the World Heavyweight Championship in a ladder match against Alberto del Rio, with help from Edge, of course. Also on the card, Kharma, aka Awesome Kong, made her debut last night by killifying Michelle McCool and then causing widespread fear in the other Divas in the back. Also, they continued the Cole/Lawler feud by having Cole pin Jim Ross. In other news, fuck them for continuing this feud.

- In other WWE news, they picked up a new sponsor over the weekend in Miller beer. No, smarks, this doesn't mean they're going to TV-14. It just means they're going to go after all the parents who watch with their kids. I'm just disappointed that they didn't pick up a GOOD beer sponsor like Sam Adams, or at least one like Budweiser who actually produces GOOD commercials. Oh well...

- The big indie happening this weekend was the ECWA Super 8 Tournament, maybe the longest tenured indie tournament in the country. Among the participants this year were Austin Aries, Adam Cole and Shockwave the Robot, but the winner was Tomasso Ciampa, who defeated Cole in the finals. Ciampa was the runner-up the last two years. The event was broadcast on GoFightLive iPPV, and one viewer was ROH executive producer Dave Lagana. He had a major problem with the announcing, and was broadcasting his dismay via Twitter all afternoon. I have to say, bad announcing can put me off to stuff that happens in the ring. It's a big reason why TNA is grating, but then again, at least Tenay and Taz aren't putting themselves over during the broadcast.
